A Joun Films, Arab Fund for Arts and Culture production, while using support of CNC, Fidlab, the Serpentine Gallery. Produced, directed, written, edited by Rania Stephan.Fantastically produced and masterfully edited, video artist Rania Stephan's "The Three Disappearances of Soad Hosni" can be a multifaceted work that employs VHS clips from Egyptian star Soad Hosni's films to research the legendary thesp's screen image. Commissioned with the Sharjah Biennial, the docu works as both art installation and cinema piece, revealing the diverse modes of female representation embodied in Hosni's charming roles. Due to the star's large fanbase as well as the debate surrounding her abnormal dying in 2001, it's inevitable that auds familiar with her work will be the most responsive. Split up into three "functions" getting a prologue and epilogue, the docu uses a good amount of clips from lots of Hosni's 82 features, made involving the early sixties and 1991. Though this is often a reduction in Hosni's achievement, act one unveils Hosni inside the blossom of youth, act two focuses on her as sexualized lady and act three shows her figures dealing with emotional extremes. Debate still rages round her dying london: Even though it was formally ruled a suicide, recent details provide the claim she was wiped out by Egypt's intelligence services, making Stephan's work unavoidably ripe with extratextual meaning.Camera (color/B&W, HD), Rana Eid.
